The Elders

  • The Elders Steer The Church

Berean Bible Church is led by its elders. The Holy Spirit teaches us in Philippians 1:1 that the church is composed of saints, deacons and elders. The saints or Christians are part of the body of Christ (Eph. 1:22-23). A Christian is one who has believed that Jesus Christ is God, that He died for our sins, was resurrected and is now in heaven. A Christian is one who has repented of his or her sins and has given his or her life to God.

Deacons and Deaconesses

Deacons and deaconesses are men and women who meet the biblical qualifications given in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. The first deacons appear in Acts 6:1-7. They were selected to make sure that the Hellenistic widows were feed daily. They were servants or helpers to the apostles and now to the elders. They are to serve the congregation (Acts 6:1-7; Rom. 16:1-2) as directed by the elders or the overseers (1 Tim. 5:17; Heb. 13:17).

The elders are godly men who satisfy the biblical qualifications given in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. The biblical qualifications reveal that an elder must be a man, not a woman (1 Tim. 2:2), of exemplary character. Among the many qualifications there are several significant qualifications. Here are some of them. First, he must be completely devoted to his wife in every way. She must be the love of his life and no one else. Second, he must be a teacher of the Word of God (1 Tim. 2:2) and he must know the Word of God (Titus 1:9). He must also love strangers. That is the meaning of the Greek word behind the English word “hospitality” (1 Tim. 2:2). He must also be a good manager of his home. He must not be a controller who seeks his own way, but rather is able to defer to others in a team decision making situation (1 Tim. 2:3; Titus 1:7).
